Qingshuiyan (Zushi Temple)

Qingshui Rock in Tamsui (Zushi Temple)

Tamsui Zushi Temple and Wanhua Zushi Temple both enshrine the same black-faced Zushi. The Zushi is said to be very efficacious and can predict local disasters by losing his nose, so it is the most important center of faith for Tamsui people. The Zushi Temple was built in 1937, but the "Falling Nose Zushi" enshrined there had been worshipped by the residents as early as the Xianfeng period. Whenever there was a natural disaster or man-made disaster, his nose would fall off to warn the villagers. He was often respected by the residents near Huwei. The story of him showing his magical powers to save the villagers of Shimen from an earthquake during the Tongzhi period was the most popular. It was also said that during the Sino-French War, the Zushi showed his power and scared away the French troops, and was awarded the plaque "Gongzi Rescue" by Emperor Guangxu. It was not until the Showa period that local people initiated the construction of the temple, and it was built in 1932 on the site of the original Xiaofu Wangye Temple. The temple is magnificent and beautifully decorated. It is filled with wood carvings by the famous craftsman Huang Guili, pottery by Chen Tianqi, and stone carvings by Zhang Mucheng. It can be called a treasure house of Tamsui folk art. On the sixth day of the fifth lunar month, the Qingshui Zushi Festival is held, and the pilgrims gather in large numbers, making it as lively as a foreign carnival.

Mangrove Reserve

Located in Ganzhen Village, Zhuwei, Tamsui District, New Taipei City, on the north bank of the Tamsui River, about 5 kilometers from the mouth of the Tamsui River. From Taipei via Provincial Highway No. 2 to Zhuwei, about 1 kilometer north to the west side of the road to Yingge Bridge, this area is 76.10 hectares, and is an out-of-district security forest under the jurisdiction of Luodong Forest District. The entire area is a riverbank sandbar swamp area where silt is deposited by the upstream of the Tamsui River. At high tide, two-thirds of the area is submerged in water, and at low tide, a clear river channel is formed through the area.

Due to the ebb and flow of tides, the fresh and salt waters mix, and the salinity changes greatly. The shrubby water-brush forest intercepts the organic matter or garbage washed down from the upper reaches of the Tamsui River, which accumulates and rots and becomes food for fish, shrimps and crabs. At the same time, it attracts flocks of water birds to come here to feed and live. This area is located on the migration path of birds in Northeast Asia. According to survey records, there are more than 63 species of birds (including resident birds and migratory birds) in this area. The resident birds are represented by sandpipers, kingfishers, little egrets, and night herons. The most common migratory and transiting birds are teal, middle curlew, small ring-necked bird, sandpiper, yellow-headed heron, and grey heron.
